  • Remember that surnames may change throughout and within generations (e.g. Smith/Smyth, Seton/Seaton).

  • Always check both 'Mac' and 'Mc' versions of surnames.

  • Sometimes a first name appears more than once within the same family, as one of the children may have died and a subsequent sibling have been christened with the same name.

  • Be aware of variations for first names - e.g. Jean, Jeanie, Janet and Jane are often used interchangeably

  • Sometimes a known first name may not be a family member's formal name (e.g. I had a great aunt, who was known to everyone as 'Cissy'. However, her birth and death records refer to her as 'Marion')

  • Even if you think you know a specific date for a birth, death or marriage, it is sensible to check the years before and after.
